The space was originally designed in 1854 by the architect James Morant Lockyer, though in 1916 Heal’s enlisted the help of architect Cecil Brewer to usher in a contemporary new look for the space. This involved the installation of the glamorous 1919 spiral staircase. Since this new era began, Heal’s has sold works from some of the most important names in design, such as Charles & Ray Eames, Georg Jensen and Michel Ducaroy, whose pieces are still stocked by Heal's today.
